🍎 Monty's Surprise
A large New Zealand apple that's useful for both eating fresh and cooking. Monty's Surprise can produce impressively large fruit, sometimes reaching around a kilogram, although fruit of this size is more likely to be irregular or knobbly.
The skin is glossy and greenish when mature, developing red striping across much of the fruit. Inside, the flesh is deep and relatively narrow around the core.
Flavour & texture: A substantial, versatile apple
Best for: Fresh eating and cooking
Why grow it: A distinctive New Zealand variety known for its unusually large fruit.
One change I would make here: I would leave the original “inhibitor for the growth of cancer cells” claim off the retail website unless Plant South has strong evidence it is permitted to make that health claim. The variety itself is interesting enough without it.
